Toby Smith, a roaster, barista and coffee artisan from Australia has brought his business to New York by opening this new treasure chest of a spot in artsy Williamsburg. Toby’s Estate is 100%, 360 degrees, all about quality coffee. They use outstanding single origin coffee, as well as caffeinated and decaffeinated blends bought directly at the origin. The beans are roasted on site and brewed in the cutting edge La MarzoccoStrada espresso machine or at a special drip bar using the pour-over method. What makes them different from other coffee shops is that they have an Espresso Lab/Cupping Room, where they roast their coffee and organize regular free public cuppings to give you a chance to learn the difference between different blends and try and compare their distinct flavors and undertones. The professional and friendly baristas are always willing to educate you and help in choosing the drink that’s right for you. The café is sizeable, with large windows letting in floods of natural light and giving a rustic atmosphere, animated by a young good-looking crowd of Williamsburg locals. There’s a savory food menu and baked goods by Katy Sparks. For the quintessential Aussie experience, get a flat white and a Vegemite on toast, mate!
